For as long as humans have graced the planet, we’ve sought to connect with forces larger than we are in the form of divination. Divination is the practice of using the material world as a means of connecting with the spiritual world. These practices are the foundation upon which all spiritual and religious systems have been built. As spiritual and religious systems took on more hierarchical structures, divination was formalized and relegated more and more to those whose power was legitimized in a given society—usually the wealthy/those from traditionally powerful/wealthy lineages, usually men. For almost 1000 years, divination was deemed illegal and/or demonic in various societies throughout the world. As these practices became delegitimized socially and spiritually, they were driven underground until they were practiced with everyday items—like decks of cards, sticks, rocks, dice and bottle caps. The Tarot is a manifestation of the underground practice of divination that began with regular decks of playing cards. A deck of Tarot cards has 78 unique energies that correspond with the complexity of energies flowing through the Earth and pulsing through our bodies. Working with the Tarot allows us to connect to the Higher Self/Inner Divine and become more intimate with the vast universal complexity that exists within each of us.
