AboutMen have long been pressured from many areas about how to “be a man.” Popular culture, boys from middle school, high school, and college, economics, the girls we have been infatuated with and the women we love and have loved have all exerted their own type of pressure on us to dress “this way” to be a man, listen to “this music,” play this or that sport, don’t show this or that emotion, show only this emotion, have a good job, make lots of money, have lots of girlfriends, drive this car, have lots of sex, open doors for women, don’t open doors for women. . .The list goes on and on. The message has been, “this is what makes you a real man.”
The one source that can truly teach us how to be healthy men is the one we seem to have lost in the 90 mile an hour modern culture. Men themselves. Who better to teach men how to be a man than other men. The vision of this group is to learn about manhood and becoming better men by learning from men the things that make us better and by learning, define our own vision of the men we are and will become. Each meeting we will focus on a specific topic related to men and manhood such as rites of passage, vocation, current issues facing men, and kindling the fire in belly to become what we can be for ourselves and those we love. Discussion, ceremony, and meditation will be the primary modes of learning in the group. The group direction will be decided by the needs of the men in the group. Join us in this journey, this quest to discover and define ourselves; to write our own biographies; to set aside childish things and be men. |
